The HDfury Diva SCALER section: no, auto and custom scaling
The scaler works on the TX0 output. You can leave the signal alone, let the Diva decide, or set the output format yourself down to colour space and bit depth.
Scaling exists because the two ends of the chain rarely agree. A 1080p source and a 4K projector, or a 4K source and a display that would rather do the upscaling itself, both benefit from someone deciding explicitly who scales what. On the Diva that decision is made here, for the TX0 upscale output port.
The three modes
- No Scaling
- The signal passes through untouched. Choose this when the display is doing a better job than any external scaler would, or when you are diagnosing a problem and want the shortest possible signal path.
- Auto Scaling
- Uses automatic presets for TX0, and is the default setting. The Diva upscales when it can, based on what the connected sink says it accepts.
- Custom Scaling
- Lets you define the scaling parameters manually, choosing between various resolutions, colour space settings and deep colour settings for the TX0 upscale output port.
Custom scaling options
- Colour space
- Follow Input, which is the default, RGB FULL, RGB BT2020, 4:4:4 BT.709, 4:4:4 BT2020, 4:2:2 BT.709, 4:2:2 BT2020, 4:2:0 BT.709 or 4:2:0 BT2020.
- Deep colour
- Follow Input, which is the default, 8-bit/24-bit, 10-bit/30-bit, 12-bit/36-bit or 16-bit/48-bit.
- 1080p60 upscale
- Scale to 4K60, or remain at 1080p60.
- 1080p30 upscale
- Scale to 4K30, or remain at 1080p30.
- SEND
- Uploads your custom scaling changes to the Diva unit. Nothing you change here takes effect until you click it.
Follow Input on both colour space and deep colour is the safe starting point, because it changes the resolution without touching anything else about the signal. Reach for an explicit colour space when a display is doing something unhelpful with what it is being given, for example forcing RGB on a monitor that mishandles YCbCr, and remember that bandwidth is finite: 4:4:4 at 12-bit asks a great deal more of the cable than 4:2:2 does.
Turning automatic upscaling off
By default, when using Auto Scaling, the Diva upscales TX0 whenever it can. Check the NO UPSCALING option to disable that behaviour, or to let the sink or display perform the upscaling instead. This matters more than it sounds: a good projector or television often has a better scaler than any pass-through device, and doing the work twice never improves a picture. If your display is well regarded for its processing, tick this and let it do the job.
REFRESH reloads the current page, which is worth doing after a source change so that you are looking at the current state rather than the state when the page loaded.
