Routing several sources to several displays

In short

A switch that routes any of several HDMI inputs to any of several outputs, with each output chosen independently.

A matrix is what lets four sources and two displays live together without anyone re-cabling. The Diva is a 4x2 one, and its two outputs are not only routed separately but processed separately as well.

Three devices are often confused. A switcher takes several inputs and feeds one output. A splitter takes one input and feeds several outputs. A matrix does both at once: any input can be sent to any output, and each output is chosen on its own, so two displays can watch two different sources or the same one.

Routing is the easy half. The hard half is that each output is a separate HDMI link with its own hot plug detect, its own EDID exchange and its own HDCP session, while the source at the other end reads only one EDID no matter how many outputs exist behind it. A matrix therefore has to act as a full repeater on both sides and decide, on its own, what description of the world each source is given.

The HDfury Diva as a 4x2 matrix

There are four HDMI inputs, all equal, and two video outputs. TX0 and TX1 are selected separately with the PORT SELECTOR in the INFO section of the web server, or with the OUT0 and OUT1 buttons on the side of the unit, and the change takes effect immediately with no re-cabling and nothing to alter at the sources. Over control the command is set insel followed by a value for each output, where 0 to 3 pick an input port and 4 means follow; set inseltx0 and set inseltx1 change one output while leaving the other alone.

That follow value is what turns the matrix into a splitter: give each output its own input and the Diva behaves as a matrix, set one output to follow the other and it behaves as a splitter. The OLED and the on-screen display report information for up to two active inputs while the unit is in its default matrix mode.

The two outputs are not equivalent. TX0 is the 18Gbps upscale port that the SCALER section works on, and it is the CEC, ARC and eARC capable one. TX1 is the HDR to SDR 1080p downscale port, where HDMI and HDCP 1.x equipment belongs. Alongside them sits a dedicated HDMI audio output. Routing decides which source each of those sees, but not what each does to it.

What routing does not change

A source still reads one EDID whichever output you have routed it to, so the EDID mode matters more than the routing. COPY TX0 SINK describes the display on TX0 to every source, even while you are watching that source on TX1, and AUTOMIX mixes the mutual capabilities of both connected sinks instead. In CUSTOM mode the story is per input rather than per output, with a table assigned to each of the four inputs.
