Dynamic metadata on top of HDR10

In short

An HDR format that adds scene by scene dynamic metadata on top of the static mastering metadata that HDR10 carries.

HDR10+ content plays on any HDR10 display, so a set that quietly ignores it looks fine and tells you nothing. The Diva decides what your source is told about it.

HDR10+ is HDR10 with dynamic metadata added. HDR10 describes a whole programme once: the mastering display's primaries and luminance, plus MaxCLL and MaxFALL. HDR10+ adds information per scene, and in some cases per frame, following SMPTE ST 2094-40, so a display that cannot reach the mastering brightness can be told how to compress each scene rather than applying one curve to two hours of film.

It was announced in 2017 by Samsung and Amazon as a royalty-light alternative to Dolby Vision, and it occupies the same slot in a chain. The dynamic metadata travels inside the video stream rather than in a separate infoframe, and a display that knows nothing about it simply plays the HDR10 layer underneath. HDR10+ content is therefore never unwatchable on an ordinary HDR display, only less carefully tone mapped, which is exactly why a chain that has quietly dropped it is hard to spot.

A display advertises support in its EDID, in the HDR dynamic metadata data block, and a source checks for that before it chooses to send HDR10+ rather than plain HDR10.

HDR10+ on the HDfury Diva

All four inputs accept HDR10+ at up to 18Gbps, alongside 4K HDR, HLG, Dolby Vision and LLDV, and the stream reaches TX0 as it arrived. What you control is what the source is told it may send. In AUTOMIX mode, HDR 10+ is one of the fourteen forceable flags: check it and the mixed EDID presents HDR10+ support regardless of what the connected sinks actually claim.

In CUSTOM mode you assign a table per input instead, which is the way to tell one source something different from the others. Custom bank 4 holds a table captured from a Samsung Q9FN that includes HDR10+ along with full sound and 3D, and banks 8, 9 and 10 are left empty for an EDID you upload yourself in the EDID section.

What the HDR tools do not reach

The controls in the HDR and DV section work on the static HDR infoframe. The custom HDR metadata generator sets EOTF, Primaries, White Point, Max Luminance, MaxCLL, Min Luminance and MaxFALL, and the disable options are written in terms of HDR10 and HLG. Dynamic metadata does not travel in that packet, so none of those controls creates, edits or strips an HDR10+ layer. The tone mapping profile has the same boundary: set hdrprofile applies only when the input is HDR10.
