Automatic RS232 commands sent on a content change

In short

A stored command or sequence of commands sent automatically when something changes, so equipment reconfigures itself without anyone pressing a button.

A projector usually needs one setup for HDR10 and another for SDR. Macros are how the Diva makes that change happen on its own, by sending your RS232 commands the moment the content type changes.

A macro, in control system terms, is a command or a sequence of commands stored behind a trigger. Something happens, the stored commands go out, and equipment that would otherwise need a remote reconfigures itself.

What makes it worth having here is that the trigger is the content itself. A projector usually wants one gamma and one lens memory for HDR10, another for SDR BT.709, and something different again for 3D. Doing that by hand every time a disc or a streaming app changes is exactly the sort of job people give up on.

A device in the middle of the chain is the right place for it, because it already knows what is arriving. It is decoding the infoframes and metadata to route and scale the signal, so the information needed to fire the macro is available before the picture reaches the display.

Macros on the HDfury Diva

The MACROS section holds the commands. The feature was built for and by the JVC projector owners community, working with HDfury on a set of automatic and custom macros, but each command can now be edited individually, which is what takes it beyond one brand. If your display accepts RS232 commands, put its own strings into the fields and those are sent instead. What is sent is entirely up to you; the Diva only decides when to send it.

The triggers are the incoming signal types people usually automate: content arriving as 3D, as HDR10, as SDR BT.709, as SDR BT.2020, and more besides, or a particular metadata value. Decide which command should go to the display for each, enable the ones you want, and the rest happens on its own.

Over RS232 or IP, set jvcmacro on enables macro sending and set jvcmacrosync on sends on every sync instead of just once at the start. set jvcmacrodelay takes 0 to 255 and sets the delay between a mode change and the command going out, which matters because a projector changing mode is not ready to listen immediately. set jvcmacrohdr10mode takes 0 to 4, where 0 is auto, 1 is ignore metadata, 2 is semiautomatic and 3 is custom.

  1. Connect the supplied RS232 jack cable from the Diva RS232 socket to the serial port on the display.
  2. Open the CEC/RS232 section and type one command into RS232 COMMAND, then use Send Ascii, or Send Binary if the string is hex.
  3. Check RS232 BAUD RATE against the display. The default is 19200, and the rate set there is the one the macros use.
  4. Only once the display answers a command you typed by hand should you put that command into a macro field.
